Background
The principal objective of the Wildlife Conservation and Management (Amendment) Bill, 2023 is to amend the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, No. 47 of 2013. Currently, Part A of the Third Schedule of the Act only allows compensation for death and injury caused by a specific list of land-based wildlife species (Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Hyena, Crocodile, Cheetah, and Buffalo). This bill seeks to extend protection and compensation eligibility to communities living near water bodies by including marine wildlife threats.
